About Us

The goal of the Modern-Day Griot project is to give Black University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) students the skills and ability to showcase the strength and beauty of the Black community and give them the opportunity to heal and share, using the principles of Nguzo Saba (Imani (spiritual), Kuumba (creative), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Nia (purpose), Ujima (responsibility), Umoja (unity), and Ujamaa (cooperative).

Through the Modern-Day Griot Project participants will have the opportunity to:

Learn about yourself.

Modern-Day Griot Project gives participants the opportunity to envision a world that is built on Afrocentric principles and focuses on our needs.

Envision yourself, and your communities, through an Afrocentric lens, guided by Nguzo Saba principles.

Let's push back on the stereotypes and internalized anti-Blackness that we all face.

Start answering the question 'who are you?'

Our responsibility is to share our stories and broaden the narrative to include all ideas of Blackness. We have the right to determine for ourselves who we are and how we see ourselves.

Build your networks.

Find your mentors, your support system, and the people who understand what it's like to navigate life in Black bodies.

Make a difference in your communities.

Take the newfound knowledge of yourself and your community to continue enriching our culture and adding our voices to the discussion of what Black excellence is and who we are.
