Why become a Modern-Day Griot?

Our Blackness is not a Burden

What's Your Story?

Blackness in digital spaces

Black people are storytellers. We have a long history of sharing our stories. Storytelling has been on a continuum—moving from one medium to another. For too long, people outside our communities have told their versions of our stories. This is where the Modern-Day Griots come into play. Through the exploration of what Black excellence is and using an Afrocentric lens, Black-identified participants will disturb the mainstream narrative of Blackness, share the stories of the Black community, and mentor younger students from the Durham District School Board.

As part of MDGP, we will explore social media and how we tell our stories through these platforms. Participants will share their stories using social media to create our digital Modern-Day Griot Project Collection.
